Both of these dropped of yesterday. Been setting for awhile from the looks.

Scared of what I will find in the tanks.

PP3516   PP4218

Least they have regular clutch covers on them.

Just took covers and bar chains off for a look. Like new under the grime. Even the air filters and spur. Hardly used. Just homeowner trimming I reckon.
1 no mix in it. Other little mix and pours like a thick syrup with some water added. LOL
I remember the PP3516 now. I had done fuel lines in it like 6-7 years ago. All the lines were still decent in both. But will get a better look later.

Just so you know. Most of these that are listed at 35cc 38cc 40cc are labeled 42cc on the rear handle tag and all use the same piston kits as 42cc saws. Just checked the piston kit for the Pp3516 35cc

Poulon pro 4218 WON'T START
« Reply #56 on: August 18, 2021, 06:38:09 pm »
So I recently came into a new'ish Poulon Pro 4218 Chainsaw for free, the previous owner stated "I purchased 2 years ago, I used it once for the project I needed it for then I put away in storage where it day for the next 2 years, took it out to use last week and it won't start" that's literally all he knew all he wanted to tell me so that's what I had to work with. I picked it up to it home and off course in thinking eSy score is got to have bad gas in the damn thing so I dumped the fuel cleared the lines put some new 50:1 fuel in the thing topped of the bar chain oil have it pull a few times and nothing won't even kinda torn over, absolutely nothing. So I checked the fuel lines more carefully made sure they were in the correct place and the primer bulb was getting fuel and it was, tried it again and nothing.so I went to the store and bought a new spark plug put it in and tried, nothing, I plugged the spark in the cap then touched the head to the main cylinder to ground and verified that it was in fact getting spark, it looked like a weaker spark but nonetheless it sparked. So ok I started to take it apart, first the sir filter, then the throttle body, both seem in fine working order them the carb which I totally disambled, cleaned, and put back together, so seemed to be working fine, practically no wear at all, all gaskets there and working and looked practically brand new, which would be consistent with what he told me about only using one time..... So put all back together after that and tried again and still nothing, so I checked in the piston chamber and I could smell gas... As far as I can tell the carb and everything up to that point work fine but just in case I sprayed some starting fluid in from the spark plug hole then put at back together and again nothing so I checked my spark plug again and it is in fact getting spark unless for some reason it's working outside the chamber but once screwed in stops working? I've never heard of such a thing although I've also never heard of a 2cycle engine that's getting spark and getting gas and still doesn't fire, not even for a half second like it doesn't 6 do anything so I went farther into my repair, or at least my attempt of a repair and took all apart again but this time taking everything apart down to the piston and the head gasket chamber my thought being that maybe the piston or the cylinder were messed up but off course they seem fine to me (although this is my first time taking apart an engine this far so don't exactly know what bad is but I can use my coomon sense and I took to my local Oreilys and asked a friend who works there and he agreed it seemed fine, the only thing at all that seemed abnormal was when I was taking apart the cylinder I cranked the piston on my own and out of the spark plug hole comes flying out this little piece of what looked like a piece of a fake work used for fishing about 1/4inch by 1/4inch,upon further inspection realized it was from a gasket... It appeared to be part of the make your own gasket stuff and when I fully removed everything there was a few more tiny pieces at the bottom where the cylinder seperates into 2 under the piston it would appear that someone maybe put a little too much in which I dint think is fine at the factory which leads me to believe that this engine has been taken apart before so maybe the dude wasn't being fully honest with me about the history of the saw..... It definitely looks on the image that is been ran more than Once but again what do I know and that still don't change my situation any..... So I put back together one more time after all that attempted to stay and Anson absolutely nothing so I took apart AGAIN and that where I stand now asking you fine folks for your help.. Like I said I'm not bad with engines at all I'm smart and very capable and have alot of tools however I'm flat stumped I was taught if u have fuel and spark it should start, oh and I did check compression by putting my thumb over the spark plug hole and have it a tug and I do have compression so all I can possibly think is that it has something to do with the fact that the spark didn't seem to be as big as it should be or the little piece of the gasket that I pulled out of the chamber however those are two really small if I guess I really don't have any idea what it could be at this point I'm completely at a loss and any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated I would really like to get the chainsaw up and running and have my first chainsaw B for free and more so I'm just very curious at this point what it could possibly be even if I can't end up getting it running as long as I could know what exactly the problem is for future knowledge that would be fine by me so then any help at all would be so appreciated sorry for the long post then why leave anything out I will try to include as many pictures as I possibly can of this whole thing taking apart possibly assist someone who is taking their time to help me. It's very possible I left something out of this so if you have any questions please feel free to ask I'll be checking regularly thank you

Hi. Well you certainly have gone to a lot of work (with respect- a lot of it unnecessary) Call me cynical, but when I see something like this advertised as was working now not- particularly for sometime, the natural thing to assume to those that know would certainly be stale fuel etc. But if it were only that, then most people would have a quick google and try and rectify that before selling on, as you will get a lot more for a working machine than one that isn't, so I am always wary when someone says it's probably old fuel.

It is difficult to say what condition your piston and cylinder are in, as there's no pictures and like you say, you are new to this. What may be good to you may well be trash to someone who knows just a bit more. For a non starting machine like yours, what I would have done is simply tipped out any old fuel, purge the primer of old fuel and tip that out the tank then removed the plug and add a good slug of carb cleaner in the bore, quickly replace the plug and give it a good pull. If it fires up for a few seconds to burn off the carb spray then stops, then you know it's a fuel issue straight away. Anyway, we are some what down the line with that now. Assuming the piston and barrel are fine, then you really need to do a proper compression test to ensure that is ok. If that is fine, and so are the piston/barrell and you have a spark and (new) fuel is getting to the engine, then it may well be work checking for a crankcase air leak- seals etc. Take the recoil off and see if there is a lot of oily woody residue around the flywheel area. Like I say, it's a bit late now to do basic checks as you have dismantled it so far.

I've just redone and tested 4 42cc strato poulan saws for folks. I have  to admit they are just so gutless of a saw that barely even get trim  type work done. Let alone bury their bars.

Nothing like the better 42cc ones before the strato crap.

Only 1 didnt have the fuel lines rotted off and he ran can poulan husky efree mix. Lines still looked new.

Might go pull a PP260 42cc non strato that hasnt been used for years off the shelf to see. Maybe I just have become spoiled with other little saws I run.

See if the 260 etc run like I recall. Know there is one up there on shelves somewhere.
