new addition to my collection
« on: February 07, 2017, 05:19:34 am »
Picked this up today fro a scrapper he claimed it goes when he rang me, I handed him the cash for it without looking to much as he was dealing with one customer and talking to another on the phone I stuck the cash under his nose and he pointed to the saw for twenty five bucks I am not going to lose out. It has good compression but has a painted or replaced starter side, when iI removed the air cleaner cover there was next to nothing left of the flocked filter and a lot of residuee visible in the carb and I could scrape grease/oil from the choke butterfly.
It feels solid and I can make out poulan 370 from whats left of the decal so I gather its a 3700
Question 1  is this saw worth spending some time on I feel at least a carb kit and fuel lines would be the minimum needed before I try and fire it up especially seeing the amount of residue visible on the carb
question 2 what other things am I looking for that could be a problem prior to first fire up

I would remove the carb and take the front cover off the muffler and look through both sides of the cylinder and at the piston to see if there's any scoring before you get going. Other than that the usual culprits are the fuel line, filter, and usually a carb kit to get it going.
I can send you an e copy of a very good repair manual if you like. Aftermarket crank seals are available as are air filters. The starter pulleys for the 3700 can be hard to find. The grey starter cover is an OEM replacement.
I like those saws.

Nice saws worth the work IMO.

I will go check the settings but you should be able to post 8 pics per post. = Restrictions: 8 per post, maximum total size 3100KB, maximum individual size 399KB

Will test below as it could be on your end. Just picked 8 random small pics to test.

The slotted AF cover was specific to the 3700 as well (although that could have been swapped on).  The Poulan replacement parts are painted that grey color.  A repair shop was supposed to paint the parts whatever color matched the originals.  Remember that these Poulans were painted a variety of colors for different retailers.

Replace the fuel/vent lines, vent duckbill valve (on a double barbed fitting just inside the tank), air filter (Stens and Oregon sell 'em still), and carb kit (K10-HDB).  I also suggest you replace the crank seals.  Very easy to do on these saws.  530019097 is the OEM seal.  SKF 6119, SKF 6120, and National/Timken 253247 are substitutes that you can easily get from your local auto parts/bearing house.

Yep like everyone else has pointed out it is worth repairing.
I have a 3700 here that I modified a little and it is a kick but running saw that I really like.   Pulls a 20" bar with authority.
Congrats on your find and a great price.
