poulan wild thing trouble shooting
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:00:43 pm »
I recently rescued a 18" Poulan Wild Thing 4018wt from a collapsed shed thinking i could figure it out since the engine still turned. I replaced the spark plug and ignition coil while i was cleaning the carburetor. It still wont run long without carb cleaner. I had cleaned the fuel lines and was suspicious of the primer bulb so ordered the primer and fuel filter today but when i tryed to start it today it felt like it was harder to pull and when the engine starts to run it feels almost like its fighting back, i was wondering if i damaged the pistons or something. any ideas would help me out.

when you put carb cleaner in it you washed the oil off the cylinder walls and increased the coefficient of friction. causing it to turn over harder. doing this repeatedly will also cause the rings and cylinder to wear because of the increased friction/heat. doing it once shouldn't have much impact. doing it repeatedly could.
pull the muffler and look at the piston/cylinder for evidence of scoring or overheating.
turning over hard could also be due to worn bearings.
one thing at a time though.
QUIT using carb cleaner in the engine and prime it with mix ONLY. if the p/c looks okay. pull the plug and pour some mix into the cylinder and work it some to get the oil back on the walls.
if you just cleaned the carb 1. how did you clean the carb? 2. did you put the gaskets and diaphragms back in the proper configuration? 3. you may need a carb kit.

Yep you need to pull the muffler and make sure it is not scored.   It also sounds like a carb kit is in order too.
It sounds like it is not pumping gas to the carb, which is the job of the diaphragm located in the carb itself.

As the others have said go ahead and check the p/c for problems.  You stated that you cleaned the fuel lines...were they still good?  Most of the time they are rotten on these....When you say fighting was it hard to pull over and then very rough & smokey once it was running?  Sounds like the needle is stuck open and the saw is extremely flooded....A carb cleaning/kit should fix it. ....make sure the fuel lines are good and not stiff/crumbly as they will clog a carb fast let alone break.

i cleaned the carb by taking plates and gaskets off and shooting carb cleaner into the fuel line holes, wiped off what looked like aluminum oxidation off the inside of the carb. the fuel lines feel greasy and pliable. It feels a little hard to turn over, im not so sure the primer is working anymore and im not sure how to check it. i looked at the piston and it has a couple of shallow scratches. I'm thinking of getting a new carb due to the erosion i am finding but the gaskets seem fine. any idea what type of carb i have i think its a walbro wta ? i still haven't gotten the primer and fuel filter in yet and have not found anyone local selling anything that looks similar to what i have.

glad you got it running but i hafta tell ya. when the carb cleaner says its for two strokes it is just saying you can use it to CLEAN two stroke carbs, NOT use it as a starting fluid. hope you get lots of fish. carry on.
