Poulan 325 pro Problem
« on: November 05, 2013, 06:00:13 pm »
Hi my Poulan 325 which I bought new many years ago has always served me well, until now.  It will start right up and run very fast even though choke is off and throttle closed.  It runs for maybe 5-10 seconds and dies.  It will not idle or stay running,  It will start right up and do the same thing over and over.  If I try and open the throttle it dies out as well in a second or to after it bogs down.  Can anyone please guide me to the problem. i did swap the in tank filter and there is no real change.  Thanks

Does the 325 have an external impulse that uses a line?  If so I would check that or the intake or the crank seals.  You could probably use a carb rebuild too.   When I get an older saw these items are almost SOP.

Thanks for all the info, and parts breakdown.  So if it is an air leak where should I begin?.  It does have a vent line on the carb with some type of cannister.  I know nothing about an impulse line??  Sorry I am new to small engine repair.  Where is the best place to get parts?? Thanks

I order poulan parts from OrderTree, Poulan pro website, Jacks small engines, Outdoor Distributors.

I have a poulan 325 gasket set with seals still. Has crankcase gasket too.  Think it is NLA  now. I've had it since 07-09 time frame.

I had 2 of them and had to redo one to make a runner again. My memory is foggy now, so I dont want to try and guess and tell you wrong on your question.

The impulse line is a rubber line that comes from the bottom of the cylinder in most cases that goes to the carb.   It takes a pulse from the crankcase every time the piston travels down and that pulse works a diaphragm in the carb which acts kind of like a fuel pump.   That is why those carbs work no matter how you hold them.

Some saws use a passage through the intake, and the carb has a small hole in it where it then allows that pulse to work the diaphragm.   So no rubber hose on those.

If you have a fuel line and another rubber line going to the carb then chances are the other line is the impulse line.

There is also a rubber tube between the cylinder and the carb adaptor. I believe it's part number 3 on the IPL (grommet) and is a piece of light rubber tube. They are always suspect for leaks. Thet are a slip fit with no clamps. Some guys put Motoseal or other gasoline resistant sealer on the joints to help keep them sealed.

There is an impulse line and sometimes the fitting on the cylinder gets loose as well.
