Poulan 2300cva improper acceleration
« on: January 19, 2012, 01:51:22 pm »
I have a 20 y/o Poulan 2300cva.  Before Christmas it started bogging down after several minutes of operation.  It would accelerate properly and then the chain would stop during a cut.  It had gotten only intermittent use until five or six years ago and has been used to cut fallen trees on our 4 ac residential property outlined by trees and for clearing a 19 ac site where we plan to build.  The only maintenance over the 20 yrs was to change the spark plug and tune to carb.  When I started to clean the air filter, it disintegrated in my hand.  I replaced it and the spark plug and retuned the carb.  I saw air in the fuel line so replaced the fuel line and filter.  While it starts better, I cannot get it to accelerate properly.  As I back it off from lean to rich it starts to accelerate better and then the idle speed tails off.  Adjusting the fast idle has no effect on acceleration.  While I have no previous experience with chain saw engines, I have done a great deal of work on cars and lawn mowers in the past 40 years, including rebuilding a Volvo engine, several different kinds of automobile carbs, domestic and import, and lawnmower carbs.  Is there anything else to do before I rebuild the carb?  Thanks!

Make sure you replaced fuel line from carb all the way to fuel filter in tank. 2 pieces.

Check compression. 120+ wanted, 140 150 great

Sounds like carb rebuild time. The diaphragm is probably stiff now and not working properly.  Kits $5 to $12 and about 30mins to do. Pay attention taking apart and or back together.

Mowers4u is a good place to call or search their  website to get carb kits.  If you know your carb numbers and type.

Thanks for the help.  The fuel line that I removed was 1 piece, even though it was shown as two pieces with a small plastic connector in between in the parts list.  So I replaced the entire length, put the fuel filter on the end and have about 3.5 to 4 inches of fuel line in the tank, in addition to the filter.  Next step is the carb rebuild!  I'll probably take pictures along the way to make sure I get it back together right.  Cell phones can be right handy!

Just a suggestion for anyone else having similar problems, I have a Poulan 2300cva and had to do some repairs with it as well. I am not an expert by any means, but I was able to find help at eReplacementParts.com.
They had all the parts I needed and they had some videos on how to do repairs and maintenance. I got my parts really quick, overall a good experience. Here's a link to the Poulan page.

No need to scrape the surface here. If that is your company put a link in your sig with info. No worries about sponsor only BS here.

We share info FREEly here.  ;) ;D
