Poulan 3000
« on: October 28, 2015, 01:43:37 pm »
I have a 3000 project saw I am putting together. I have a fine top end that has enough compression to be a good runner, however while I have it apart, I was wondering if a 3300, 3400 or 3700 piston and cylinder would bolt on? Also, thoughts on leaving out the base gasket or cutting a thinner one? A modified muffler goes without saying, but since I have the motor apart and $0 into it and the parts saw, I am considering playing around with some other mods. Has anyone had any luck with advancing the timing on these? Whats a safe amount, 2-2.5* or so?

Thanks!

3400 3700 NO GO.

3300 if matched set as the 3300 is bare bore, chrome piston.

305 same bore as 3000 or the poulan 335 is same bore as 3300, but is chrome bore and thin rings piston OEM. But you can run a 330 piston in it as 335 thin rings NLA.

I used to leave base gaskets out but dont anymore. Lot of folks still do it for little more psi and torque.  I just used Threebond 1194 as squish was good no thin gasket needed.

I never messed with any timing on these.  Try it and let us know your findings.

Wow- thanks so much for your fast response!

I am going to try and source some parts.  I know from vintage MX experience that running the wrong type of rings in a plated cylinder causes all types of issues.  So from what you said, if I wanted to bump the displacement I should look for a 335 cylinder and a 330 piston kit?

Yep.  That set up was also OEM on the Poulan Predator 335.   Thread on it here.

I have the thin ring piston for that 335 cylinder. But they are stuck good. Plus rings NLA. I was just going to use a 330 3450 piston kit in it some day.

There is a 335 piston kit on ebay but I haven't found a 330 kit, nor a 335 cylinder.

The upgrade is not super critical, and I have two saws, one with a wasted piston.  So I may just put the Craftsman body together with the good 3000 top end I have betweent he two, and save the nice Poulan bottom end for when I gather up the "Predator" parts.

Thanks so much for all the links- I am reading up now!

I was sent over here from an "Aborist Site" and am glad I found you/all this for sure.
