I would like to also add that this brake was mostly never used.

Wear must occur from thermo plastic shift, aka warpage, to cause the band to rub clutch drum in normal use.

I wonder what weight penalty a magnesium cover would have added to these saws?

The older are out there. I hear they are heavy
