Poulan 335
« on: December 21, 2012, 04:45:53 pm »
Well I bought this Poulan 335 that had a crack in the crank case where someone had twisted the bar studs and **** the case right behind the rear stud and making it loose.   I was going to weld it up but then saw a crank case with good seals, bearings, and crankshaft on the bay for 12 bucks and 12 dollars to ship it.  I could not pass that up.  So I switched everything over from my old saw to the new crankcase did a pressure and vacume check and all is good.   I got rid of the base gasket and shaved the bottom of the cylinder to a squish of .018.  Widened the ports alittle and did a compression test, a 195 psi.  I then decided to take the rocked .325 chain grind it and then use a square file on it.  I am not big on filing chain because I have a grinder but the repetitive motion is sometimes relaxing for me.  I took a stihl triagle file and ground it down on one side so that it would fit a .325 chain.  I am very please with the over performance of this saw now.  Man does it cut good.   I have never seen a square chisel chain before and just went by some pictures and intructions I read and I have a low beak on some of the cutters but overall it still performs pretty good.  Have a look.

The 335 is one of my favorites. 54cc in a 3 cube package.

Sold my only one to my training officer friend that was going to buy a plastic stihl for some work around his house. He told me he was real happy with his decision of buying the 335.  Traded my 305 to another friend at work.  Least they have real saws IMO and not those plastic over priced  ;)

I had a stihl RS 325 done on a swingarm square grinder once. That thing cut super fast.

I would like to have a square grinder but the money they get for them is out my range.

Thats weird I see them all. About 9.  I'll do some different posting later then. No time to fiddle with it.

Thanks for the heads up.
