Thanks Brokenbudget,
I may just leave it alone and do the mods you suggested. Have you tried advancing the timing any with the mods you described?

This 3700 I just finished I advanced it by 4 degrees.   I cut the key way alittle wider in the flywheel.

How does the FW stay locked in place with the wider keyway? I read about slotting the coil a bit to advance timing, any experience with that?

3000FPS,
Did you add the vent slots to your air filter cover?

That is a standard air filter cover for a 3700.  It is one of the tell tell signs for determining a 3400 from a 3700.  You can get one of those filter covers off of ebay and it should fit right on your 3400.  It also uses the same filter as the 3400.

I didnt know that till now.   8)

Another option.  I sold my last high top 4000 air filter cover, but know where you can get them and new air filters.

Really I was thinking about going to a 4000 filter and cover on the 3700 for better flow.   The 4000 uses a mesh filter instead of the flocked and it also has more surface area.  Where did you say that was.

Well to advance the timing you turn the flywheel in a clockwise direction.   So I widen the slot on the left side so that it will still rest against that side.   You only need about a 1/16th of an inch to get around 3 to 4 degrees.   I then line up the flywheel where I want it and tap in on with a socket and hammer so that it gets tight on the taper.  Then I tighten it the rest of the way down with a 3/8ths impact gun.    I then double check my timing and make sure it is right and the taper on the fly wheel is actually enough to keep it in place.

filter  http://www.usedpowerequipmentparts.com/servlet/the-2318/Poulan--Craftsman-/Detail

Both high top covers sold out.  :-X

Well shoot.   The filters are not to bad to find but the covers are a different story.    Why they sold out so quick.

To advance timing, the flywheel must go COUNTERCLOCKWISE!
The crank goes clockwise if you are widening the slot in it, you will remove material from the left side.
I always remove from the flywheel. They are easier to replace if you mess up!!!
The engine rotates counterclockwise and to advance, you have to get it there earlier.
