Hi fellers,   On my craftsman 3.7 (3700) , all original, it does not have the slotted cover. ??? And speaking of thin rings, what exactly is the significance?  Appreciate any info.  Chris

The 3400 and 3800 Poulans had two thick rings with an aluminum cylinder bore and a chrome plated piston.
The 3700 has two very thin rings I would say at least half the thickness or more of the ones used on a 3400 and 3800.   The 3700 uses a cylinder with a chrome plated bore and a plain aluminum piston.

Your craftsman probably is a 3800 even though it is marked 3.7.   Is your saw red or gray?

You can always pull the muffler and look into to the exhaust port and see if you have two really thin rings, then it is a 3700 if not it is a 3800.     I have two craftsman saws here one is gray and one is red marked 3.7 neither one has a slotted filter cover and both are 3800 with the thick rings.

3000FPS, my saw is a 1982 red 3.7. It's got thin rings. The original owner gave it to me a few years ago. Low hour, original control tip bar ( banana ) original chain and air filter. Didn't realize what I had until recently. Love this saw. Even had the original fuel filter. P+C are immaculate. Paint is a little chipped up.  Do you know HP rating? I rebuilt carb, new fuel lines, put an Echo tank vent on it , new gaskets and diaphragm in the oil pump. Runs and sounds great. I need to find someone to modify the muffler.

Brokenbudget, I like that air filter mod, have to try that. Did you do that MM?
