Poulan 3400

I have a question concerning my old 3400

The issue I'm having is that it will start fine, and run just about long enough to get hot, and will shut down. It wont start again until it cools off.

I looked up the specifications on the saw and I've found that Poulan recommends a maximum ration of 32:1 fuel mixture. I believe the mix I am running in it is 16:1.

Is it possible that it is running hot with this mixture and causing the saw to shut down?

What would y'all suggest?
Different fuel mixture?

I myself run 40 to 1 in the saws that I have including the Poulan 3400,3700 and, 3800 that I have.   If the tuning on the carburetor is correct then the engine should get enouph fuel mixture and oil to keep it lubricated.  You could pull the plug and look at it to see how it is running and look down through the plug hole to see if there is alot of carbon build up from excessive oil.  You can also pull the muffler which is real easy on the 3400 and see how much oil is on the piston.  While you have the muffler off clean the spark arrestor screen which could be plugged up.  Burn it off with a propane torch.   Let us know what you find.

2 stroke oil has changed a lot since that 3400 was made and it's recommendations on oil ratio JMO. I would drop the 16:1 ratio and I would try 32:1 or 40:1

I had a poulan and a stihl that would run till warm then start cutting out and die. Wouldnt start till cooled off. Both were coils.

   I do not know why I did not mention the coil as causing that for I have seen that also.

Bluegill just sold this 3400 he bought new in 1988 for $75 shipped. One thing I noticed and Gary too was the AF color is like the green on Aarons 4900 I think it was.  I hadnt seen this on the 3400 or others with green covers in this series.

I sure cut a Lot of wood with that saw, but it's not been getting much use the last few years. Those old 3400 are great saws!

Interesting AF cover color.  I'll have to look.......................but I think I have a 3400 parts carcass that has an AF cover that's the same color pictured.  It's not quite as brown as that Olive covered top cover on my 4900.  When I'm in the shop tomorrow I'll try to remember to dig up that cover and shoot a pic of it next to the 4900.
