Poulan chain brakes
« on: February 18, 2013, 10:12:57 am »
Did Poulan resist the use of chainbrakes ? I've seen many saws here up into the late 90's without chain brakes. While researching my  Craftsman 3.7 ( 1982 model, thin rings ) I read somewhere in an old Poulan advertisement something to the effect that they didn't " trust " or recommend brakes. Were the early brakes mechanical only? I presume brakes are required by law now , if so since when, and what do guys think about the issue. TIA.  Chris

I had a 1997 Poulan 3500 with no brake but they made saws with brakes long before that.

I think they were trying to cater to all the customers. There were a contingent that thought brakes were a unnecessary source of trouble.

Chainbrakes weren't fitted to Poulan saws sold in the US until the 1990's somewhere.  They were fitted to saws sold in other markets (Canada, Australia, etc) long before that.  Chainbrake refit 'kits' were also sold by Poulan through dealers.  Seen those for XXV series, 3400-4000 series, and 4200-8500 series saws.

I always thought a 3450/3750 chain brake type cover would be a direct bolt on to my 3500

Truefully, I never missed the chain brake and thought nothing of it one way or the other.

I took a 330 chain brake and it was perfect fit for 365 @ Jim.

My 1999 3750's had no chain brake. The newest one did 2000?
