Poulan Crankshaft Alignment Plate
« on: March 10, 2015, 10:32:00 pm »
Service manual states 'Place crankshaft alignment plate into locating holes on chassis. Place chassis on cylinder, aligning crankshaft with plate.'
(see attachment)
Isn't crankshaft centered by bearings that are fitted in cutouts of crankcase cap. Then cylinder assembly just bolted to chassis?
I do not understand what is being "aligned".
Can someone explain what this means and if it is necessary?
If necessary, is there another way to align without plate?

Ok I looked at the attachment and the engine is a clamshell design.    I have taken a lot of these apart and put them back together without an alignment plate.
This is the first time I have heard of one and is not like there is a lot of slop in the assembly of one these engines.
They only go together one way and everything lines up just fine.

I have mixed and matched before and never a problem yet.  Like lower from 1 260 and cylinder clam from another 260. Still out there cutting.

Where did you find the document?  I am looking for a similar one for a 3450.  Good to know to torque to 100 in/lb.

I'd also like to see the rest of that document.  Would also like to know which series it applies to.  There are a few different Poulan 'clamshell' saw families.

For older saws:
Tune the H side so that it 4-strokes (burbles) at WOT unloaded and just cleans up when under load.
When you lift cutting load, the saw should immediately revert to 4-stroking.  Fine tune the transition point for the wood you're cutting.

I have looked at the alignment plate and it simply there to help put the cylinder, crankcase cover, and the chassis together.    What I am saying it is a waste of time and money.  I have had wild things and the Poulan 260's apart and modified and put back together and had them perform better then when new.

If you look you will notice that the 4 bolts that hold the engine together are also the same 4 bolts that hold the engine in the chassis.   The only thing this alignment plate might do is to aid in the assembly of the cylinder, the crankcase cover, and the chassis.   It sure is not needed for any kind of alignment.
