They stick their name on just about anythng .My brother in law bought a 12 HP  ,Poulan name from Sears and Roebuck .It was the spitting image of my 12 HP MTD except it was painted green instead of red .

I don't know about splitters but most mowers are made by the Ohio mower company that some how ended up in Kentucky .Must have flunked geography in grade school .

Ohio mower company?   I seen a big MTD building up near Jim's place in Shelby and there's another in Willard I think.

Mtd push mowers and the self propelled push mowers are made on the South side of Tupelo Ms in the former Aircap lawn mower factory in Verona, MS. They more recently bought the huge Eljer plumbing warehouse next door and across the highway for a regional warehouse.

I don't know just where the roto tillers and snow blowers are made but likely in Shelby or Tupelo?

The riding mowers are made at a new factory on the South edge of Shelby, OH at the old airport location but they have a big warehouse on the north side of town in a WW II era government warehouse area where their rider assembly factory was for close to 40 years.

There is a parts plant that was originally called Midwest Industries during the 60's in Willard, OH about 15 miles north. I think it is now more like small presses and other small cut-off type parts machines but originally was push mower assembly .

MTD also has a couple good sized plants just North of Leitchfield, KY. I suspect that one makes transmissions and other is plastic molding?

There is a big machining type plant on the West side of Cleveland, OH that was originally called Modern Tool and Die hence the company name MTD. I must add here that MTD has components plants in various areas around Cleveland. One was the former Arnold plastic injection molding plant in Valley Cty, OH on the SW edge of Cleveland.

The log splitter component parts are actually made by a different company (possibly a subsidiary?) on the South side of Cleveland

A long time ago they used to make transmission housings at the Foote foundry in Fredricktown Ohio .

It was a neat little tranny like a miniture car tranny .I haven't seen that style used in years though .

It's my assumption  that most likely only a few places make production runs of splitters which get sold under different names .Probabley made to specifications .Similar to Whirlpool and appliances .

I have to laugh thinking back of the Crysler 460 marine engines which were actually Ford painted gray instead of blue .It's kind of hard to figure out the players without a score card .

MTD products sometimes brings up a lot of discussion.

Not everyone likes them.

The MTD line of log splitter made under various names like Troy Bilt, Bolens, Yard Man, etc are typically made with the cylinder being made with a trunnion at the rod end.

Some of these have been known to tear out one of the pins which ruins the cylinder $$$

I've had a 27 ton myself for some 7 years and there has never been a problem,

But I haven't been splitting any gnarled crotches or hard to split wood either.

First for me too never seen of or heard of either .  Tractor or skid steer mounted splitters are a very bad idea IMO.  You're using a $20,000.00 up piece of equipment vs a $250.00 mower engine.

Depends on how you look at it . Many skidloader mounts are made in such a way they can invert and split with the mechanism on top ,log under .3 point hitch with a PTO driven pump the tractor engine isn't over worked .

They all work no matter if they are tip up type or strictly horizontal so it's more of a personal preference than anything .Some think they need 4 and 6 way wedges which of course might get-er-done faster but then again just a single wedge will put out more wood than most people can off bear .

I see some of those super fast splitters with two young guys in their 20's off bearing . Might look good on a short film clip but young fellows or not they would never in a million years be able to out work that machine .

They get tired ,want to take a break that machine could care less as long as it has fuel .

you're right al. i've personaly never seen a reason for the multi wedges on a splitter. you don't save any time. people don't realize the time it takes to pick up all those pieces, sometimes having to make a few twists of the body to clear the table or the spot yer feet are. at the end of the day that mutli wedge may wear you out faster than a single, and no more done at the end of the day.
when I grow up, i wanna be an adult.
