That may very well be the case with Poulan .The example I used was marketed by Sears  and Roebuck,painted green  and was an exact replica of a 12HP MTD I have including the 7 speed snowmobile drive type with spring loaded expandable drive pulleys  transmission .

Both where shuttle forward reverse and would run as fast in either direction and both were 42" cut ,two blade deck .Somebody copied somebody ,which one I have no idea .I'm almost certain the old 12 HP I have was made by Ohio mower but I'll check tomorrow to make certain .Poulan might have made it for all I know .

Edited after thought: My mistake the example I mentioned was a 38"two blade deck .I have a 42" Sears with a snowmobile drive but it's a three blade with a 19.5 HP twin cylinder .
