The log splitter was sold by Poulan back in late 70s, early 80s. They offered 3 sizes, plus a unit with only the cylinder & beam that you adapted to your own hydraulic system. It was not made by MTD or Speeco (sp?). I forget the supplier, but if I heard the name I would remember it. I do remember that the manufacturer was a well respected log splitter manufacturer of the time.
As for the Poulan branded MTD mower; Poulan has never put their name on an MTD product nor would they ever. MTD is a direct competitor to Husqvarna (includes Poulan and AYP - American Yard Products). The Poulan branded mower was made by AYP in Orangeburg, SC.

That may very well be the case with Poulan .The example I used was marketed by Sears  and Roebuck,painted green  and was an exact replica of a 12HP MTD I have including the 7 speed snowmobile drive type with spring loaded expandable drive pulleys  transmission .

Both where shuttle forward reverse and would run as fast in either direction and both were 42" cut ,two blade deck .Somebody copied somebody ,which one I have no idea .I'm almost certain the old 12 HP I have was made by Ohio mower but I'll check tomorrow to make certain .Poulan might have made it for all I know .

Edited after thought: My mistake the example I mentioned was a 38"two blade deck .I have a 42" Sears with a snowmobile drive but it's a three blade with a 19.5 HP twin cylinder .

That mower afore mentioned was MTD Cleveland .Which doesn't neccessesarily mean that's where it was made .

I have some MTD and AYP (sears) push mowers. The engines are the same series B&S but the decks are made different.

That owners manual that Tim found was pretty neat.    Plus you cannot beat a picture for identification.

The Roper/AYP made Sears Mowers/Tillers/Tractors/etc were better made than the MTD and Murray made machines.  That was my opinion after working on hundreds of 'em for Sears Service in the 1990's anyway....

I live close enough to the MTD riding mower factory to hear the exhaust fans on the roof in the summer.  If it were not for the trees I could see it from the front porch.

But I've always stayed away from the riding mowers. Never heard anything good about them?

The push mowers are made in Mississippi.

At least concerning Sears branded machines..................of the three, AYP produced the best stuff with MTD being a distant second and Murray being last.
