The holes in front  is to help get the heat away from the rear exit from front of cylinder even though has heat shield.  Seems to help in my mind anyways.  Plus I open the rear vents with screwdriver blade to get it to exit better too.  Hopefully I am remembering the right saw.

i like the 295 and 2600 saws never did get the 260 running good enough to trust it... on a job.....is the only difference the primer system ?

I dont know the 295 saws at all. But IMO the 295 260 saws are totally different saws. I got some pics with top covers off.  The 295 has a bolt on real type air filter where the 260 uses the foam push in one.

With the AV top handle spring broke. I looked closer and found the handel has been rednecked too. See the patch with bolts. Thinking I got one on the shelf I can use. If it isnt busted too. Think a tree had got the other one too.

Besides that rotted fuel line like normal is all I can see without pulling muffler.

On the 260 make sure you check the bolts in the bottom that hold the engine in place.   Those same bolts also hold the clam shell together unlike the 295 which has separate bolts for each job.

I know the 260 really well to know that part on 4 bolts to clam. But I sure didnt know about the 295 being that way. Thanks for the tip.

Guess I better dig up a IPL for it just in case. Thanks.

Dang took me 2 years to get back to this one.

Just went through my parts and found a good rear handle and better top handle for the poulan 260 in pic above.

Replaced everything and sill need some parts. But after new fuel line etc she is up and running good.

Went ahead and did the front 2 holes for a small muffler mod as the side one was melting the side of case at exit area for some reason.

Part list save to get.

Besides all the other stuff I found wrong with this saw. I think the reason it didnt start anymore was 1 of the coil screws was loose and had started scraping the flywheel.

Cleaned it up loosened the other one and put a business card in to set gap. All good again.

The best muffler combo for these is to combine the heat shield/delector from the cat converter versions (last ones made before the switch to strato, about 2004) with the older 2 piece muffler.  You can hog out the back corner quite large and the duct keeps it off the brake handle.  It's fairly quiet too.

It's best when combined with the lower heat shield from the cat versions too.

Interesting never seen the lower shield or back piece like you showed for a 260.   Slow reread now see what you did. Never new they worked on the 260 etc.  Nice thinking.

Was told a box arrived and betting it is the other PP260 with bad oiler. Hope that is all it needs anyway.
