When Poulan upsized the passage in the intake boots for this series they should have also made the flange on the carb end more substantial.  Looking at that end of both boots, it's easy to see that the smaller boot (for the earlier saws) has more sealing area.

The larger boot has precious little flat sealing surface between the inner passage and the notches for the bolts.  There also just plain ain't much flange left on that end of the boot on the large passage version (since they didn't make the flange bigger).  Not much left there to hold the boot in place and keep that end from squirming out of alignment (compared to the original boot design).

I understand why certain dimensions couldn't be altered (because the spacing of the boot clamp/carb box/boot/carb plate/gasket/carb thru-bolts is dictated by the spacing of the carb body holes).  They should have either changed the design of the intake track..............or just left the boot size alone.  Rant over....... 8)

poulan 3450 #3 right now on hand.

Wow where to start. Someone in TN cobbled this ole boy.  They put a new looking 3450 piston in backward to start. That fubarred it over time (beat or wore locating ring pin and allowed ring to go 360 degree around piston) . IMO the reason for the scuffs on it.

Intake boot had 2 tears at mounting flange ears and a rip on top under clamp and under bottom of boot under clamp. Also more reasons for scuffing piston.

Then this saw might have been one of those with carb issues as it had a smaller HDA 49 carb on it from the earlier saws.

Didnt someone else here just mention they had a saw in this series with piston backwards?  Thinking no damage though.

Raining out soooooooo  put the 60cc 3450 together.

Never seen a project go so smooth putting it together.  Took the piston out of other project saw. Pulled ring even though it looked somewhat new just like the piston is.  Went to put on a new ring out of my parts and I was like hmmmm it came out of poulan bin but could tell not going to go over. Duh ordered 2 54cc rings too and had to find my 2 60cc rings I ordered later in other poulan bin.  Now all rings in 1 bin. ;)

Put new boot and known good 164 carb that was on my #3 badboy as a test carb.

Went with a thicker O.D. fuel line with same I.D. still. Hate how the oem size line when starts to shrink can seep mix.  Little harder to pull though but should be worth it. in my eyes.

She runs.
Started it let idle quick blip let idle. Done for now.

Ran the 60cc 3450 with 3/8 20" bar buried in 19"-20" today and in some smaller 16".   Good to go.
