I would by the tool for $4 the one I found was $70

Well if your going to be working on your own saws I think 4 bucks is pretty cheap.

If I am going to save myself 100 bucks by replacing the crank seals my self I sure am not going to whine about a 4 dollar tool.

You know it does not matter what your working on sooner or later your going to have to buy a tool to do the work right.

Have you ever pulled the crank seals on one of these before and how do you plan on doing that.

I just looked. Jack's small engine 4.91. Sears parts direct 4.65. Google the part number.

No I haven't done the seals on this model saw. I did my 3400 and stihl 026 with less hassle though. I'm not opposed on buying tools either.

Magnum it does not matter what make saw your working on they all have their own quirks, it is just part of the chainsaw world. I think the Poulans are the easiest to work on. Once you get the worm gear off then the seals should be a walk in the park for you since you have done some seals before. It will be worth the effort and that worm gear puller is good for a lot of different model Poulans.

I ordered the worm puller for use on the PP380 that I'm changing seals on. It's cheap enough that I don't need to screw around with improvised worm removal shenanigans. Also ordered an extra pair of seals for the next one of these that comes along. Should have ordered an extra intake boot (along with the one I ordered for this saw) too....

Flywheels on these and other Poulans seem to come off pretty easy (certainly compared to some old Macs and Husqvarnas that I've worked on). I get my kid to grab a thick fin on the FW with some pliers and lift up while I hold a jack screw from a puller against the crank snout and give that jack screw a whack or two with a hammer. FW pops right off. I've done the job myself many times too...

Ever replace the piston in 3400?

Replace the piston in the 3400 and 330 and let us know the easier one without rednecking a special tool.

My parts from Tulsa Engine Warehouse came in yesterday. 4 very fresh looking crank seals, an intake boot, and the $5 oil pump worm drive puller. Good stuff. I should have ordered another intake boot for safekeeping.

Some things are indeed easier/less complicated on the 3400-4000 series. The pressed piston setup sure isn't one of them though.
