Poulan Pro PP4218AVX Chain Slackens
« on: April 03, 2018, 04:37:07 pm »
Bought at a yard sale. Runs and cuts well, but the chain slackens after 2-3 minutes of cutting and need retightening. Reading another forum, it says:
Chain would not stay adjusted. Clip spring was missing, installed new clip spring on adjusting screw and chain stays in adjustment.
In the parts diagram it does show a clip spring #50. I do not remember ever seeing this clip when removing the clutch cover.

Since the bar is securely clamped to the body of the saw after adjusting the chain, it's hard to see how a "clip spring" on the adjusting screw will prevent the bar from sliding. The clip costs approx $9 (with shipping), and I'd like to be sure it's really needed. Any suggestions?

On my PP4620avx, I ditched the entire tool-less assembly and replaced it with the older style cover. Those adjusters just don't work properly. A close look at the illustrated parts lists revealed the number I needed to order and if I remember right, the whole assembly was less than $20 at the time.

Not sure if that is possible with your model saw but worth a look.

Did the same thing for a friends saw. Ditch that tooless cover.

I replaced the gear in it one time. 2nd time he finally said change the cover over like above.

Here is thread. https://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/poulan/poulan-4620/

From what I'm gathering, that clip spring won't have any effect on keeping the chain tight. The issue seems to be using a clamping nut on a single stud. I'm going to try fitting a lock washer on the stud to see if it holds better. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the replies!  :)

Well, the lock washer helped, but didn't fix the problem. I'm convinced that the tool-less tightening assembly just doesn't allow enough torque on the stud to keep it from slipping (as others have pointed out). I'd like to try a nut in place of the assembly that I can torque with a wrench. It looks to be a 5/16" - 20 stud, but somewhere I read that it might be 5/16" - 18. Does anyone know for sure?

Understand, but I can send away to Jack's for a "bar nut" at 78¢ + $8 shipping, or I can get a nut in the hardware store for < $1 if I know the size.

I have seen a picture somewhere that shows how someone removed material that prevents installing a second nut on the cover and installing two regular Husqvarna bar nuts. I think they used a Dremel to notch the cover.

metric 8mm x 1.25

That's the info I was really looking for. It converts closely to 5/16-20 SAE nut size. I'm thinking if I bore out the plastic on the cover to expose the forward stud, I can use a coupling nut (1" long), and wouldn't have to make a hole large enough for a socket to fit. I'm in Hurley, NY. Thanks for all the info. :)
