PP 335 - General Service Questions
« on: January 08, 2015, 11:47:25 pm »
Hi folks,

I am unfamiliar with the oil pump on this saw and have some general questions while I am cleaning it up.  I've attached photos to help if necessary.

I want to pull the oil pump and inspect the operation/lines.  I am only familiar with impulse pumps on the 3400-4000 series. Does the pump pivot away from the worm gear when the 3 housing bolts are pulled? Is there anything in the way of service or cleaning of the pump itself that should be looked upon?  Any gear alignment notes  when reassembling?  Check valves, o-rings, springs?  Any parts going to go flying when I least expect it?

I won't be splitting the saw, and can avoid trying to pull the worm gear, as the cylinder/rings/piston are immaculate.

There was what I believe to be some sort of plastic (dust?) ring that was behind the thrust washer between the pump seal and the clutch hub (see photo) .  This one is torched.  I do not see this on the IPL so I don't know if this can be tossed and ignored.

I've used windshield washer pump line for the carburetor impulse.  It was free.

The fuel vent line has some sort of porous plug insert to keep debris out.  When replacing with new line is a course threaded screw sufficient, or are there better options?

The carburetor is an HD 49.  The basic one turn out on the L and H and tune from there?  Any known hiccups with this carburetor?  The saw will be running a 16" 0.325  0.050. I will likely add an additional port in front of the factory one on the muffler. Hopefully it will be happy with an 8 T rim.

Thanks in advance for any advice/instruction on my numerous inquiries - Cory

On the oil pump you should be able to take out the three screws and then carefully lift the pump off.   You may have to pry it a little but just take your time.
The washer you show I do not know what that is and I do not recall one being there.

There pourus plug in the vent line is the vent.   You can use a screw if you like.

As far as the carb goes I do not remember where to start on the setting.   I think I would start around 1 1/2 turns on the hi and low and then do the standard tuning by ear from there.

Those oil pumps are pretty good and I do not believe I have ever seen one bad on any of my saws.  That pump is also used on a lot of different model Poulans.

I dont ever recall a plastic ring like that between washer and oil pump seal.  Nice saws.

Worm gear puller is like $4.

Thanks fellows.

I will report back after I pull that pump as to any further pump disassembly and/or cleaning.

How does that windshield washer line hold up to the heat that is put out down there at the cylinder.   It gets pretty hot there.

That is a good question.  The original Tygon type line certainly did not.

Kevin had posted that folks were having success with the black Echo fuel line and provided p# for them.  Aaron had posted on another thread, that I don't recall, that automotive washer pump line was a good choice.  When I picked up 1/2 dozen SKF 6119 seals the fellow threw the line in.

It is very thick-walled and fits the barb well.  I am not set on using it and could try and hit up the Echo repair shop if that fuel line is a better route.  I know I will need more impulse line for other projects in queue.

Thanks for the heads-up on the air filter.

Let us see what Aaron has to say he might of tried that line before and can tell us how it held up.   Hopefully he will check back in.

Edit on the washer line.

I found the thread and Aaron actually mentioned high temp vacuum line.  It was another member that had tried the washer line with success.

Too much searching and cross-referencing on my part.

I don't aim to put words in people's mouths - sorry Aaron.  The washer line is the thick black rubber type but likely not high temp....hmmm

I could do an experiment for inquiring minds?
