rls8836, I have a Poulan Black Hawk, 14"bar that is 8 to 10 years old.  Has been a great light weight saw that started and ran great all the time.  Last summer it started doing the same thing you discribe in your original post.  This problem has been very puzzeling!  I have removed the flywheel and the cast in place key is in good shape as is the key way in the crank shaft.  If the spark plug is in, the pull rope nearly breaks my fingers wether the kill switch is on or off.  With the spark plug removed, the engine turnes over freely with no issues. I expected to find a sheared key, but when the saw behaved the same way with the switch in both the on and off positions confussion began to come into play..  Checked the spark and it looks good, both via the spark plug grounding test and via using a spark gap tester.  There is no spark when the switch is in the off position.  My next planned action is to remove the muffler to see what conditions are like in the muffler and check the condition of the piston and cylinder wall through the muffler opening.  If that doesn't reveal a possible cause, I next plan to remove the carb. to see what things look like on that side.  Plan to check out the muffler and carb. sides this evening.  Will let you know what the out come of that is, if anything.  During the work I have done up to now, the fuel tank has been empty and there has been no fuel in the cylinder after removing the spark plug, thus hydro locking would seem to be a very remote possibility.  Am hoping an answer is evident upon removal of the muffler and/or the carburetor.  Nick, North West Farmer
