so the neighbour (who did end up buying it) comes over a couple sunday night's ago, says his dad really likes the 3400 :) and wants to know if i have any more i would like to get rid of, but wants a chainbrake. the neighour (justin) came over and seen the other (yellow) saw, but i told him i wouldn't be getting around to pulling it down until late next week, but i had an idea. i don't care either way weather one of these has a brake on it, and i can fix the one off the 3700, and use the non-brake cover off the 3400 on it. i ordered a nos brake side cover off the bay, as the adjustment area on the 3700 was broke good. and switched over all the parts. now, i gotta tell you, it isn't fun dealing with those springs. they are strong.
i ended up having to also use the muffler off the 3700 to re-muffler mod as the port is right in the way of the brake arm. took a half hour to get the side cover done, and another half hour for the muffler (not including the paint ;) ) and she's a complete saw again. justin's dad was just like a kid on christmas morning. says he's bought many new saws over they years, but this one was making him loose sleep at night. guess there's another one coming down with cad. :D and the gentleman is almost 70.
here's the finished product:

so i went down the the local carquest with the brake arm as a good example for a color match. they screen it with the gun, and 5 minutes later they hand me over a spray can and a bill. in all the 15 years i've been going there for paint, i've never had a screw up until this. i ended up giving it a good coat anyway as i did sort of like the color, but wasn't sure if justin or his dad would like it and maybe wanted an exact match. figure i'd throw a random sticker from around the shop on it and see. they told me to leave it, it looks great. 8) so i guess i'm finished on it.
is it odd that this saw will easily run side by side with a husqvarna 365 speshul? ;D
and yes that stump is where the cover was painted! nothing but the best for me ;D and the paint turned out smooth and shinny with no dirt or fish eyes.

Nice job, thanks also for the story behind it Superrrr

I love me some 3400 just something about the way they sound and run with the squish lowered and a muffler mod. This one has a scored cylinder and is still pulling 145 psi.

One thing about 3400 is that there are plenty of them out there.

Hi Steve

My 3400 has a chainbrake but it seems to have very little movement when compared to others.  It also seems to rub on the clutch so I was wondering if I would just get a plain clutch cover and be done with it.  Saw runs well otherwise.

yeah a regular cover will just bolt on. nothing to modify etc.
try to tighten that little flat slot screw above the chain. a half turn will make a good difference.
