woooowee! :)
ran it that spring and did good at the north augusta (waddever they call it) festival while breaking it in. the only other saw to show up that day was a muff modded husky 365 special (good customer of mine). that saw runs pretty darn good but in the " 12 inch" green poplar i think i had him by about a split second. no special chains, just round filed lpx on both saws. and the saw horses sucked!
square filed a chain with the a-top i sold here to 660, and  brought it to the athens corn fest (5+ mine saws there), and took a second place ribbon (plus a gift certificate to the local coffee shop--very good coffee). no times, they decided who ever was through the wood first was the winner :D that wood was around 10" dia.. if i remember correctly, the saws were one husky 61, same customers 365, stihl 026--guy said he ported it?? didn't seem to be--, poulan wildthing--oh yes one showed up. and a homelite variant of a solo, can't remember what model. the husky was pretty hot. sounded awsome! as you can tell, these aint no pro shows ;D just for the fun of it. i was just happy the saw didn't fall apart in front of everybody. even happier it out ran one of my favorite saws.
this past early summer i was using it to dice some manitoba (crap) maple and it lost all it's torque. i shut it down and there doesn't seem to be any engine damage so i suspect the intake block might have **** where i got a little close to the edge while grinding it. still has 155psi. comp.... :)
when i get done with this moving crap and everything sorted out i'll be back into it to change a few things. i have a new cylinder and piston for it and would like to try something else.
oh yeah! the carb is some varient of tillotson. can't remember what model, was for a bigger jonsered... pain in the arse to tune on this saw..... :D

That was interesting reading.  I did no know you were going to actually race that saw.   Why did you not use a 3700 instead of the 3400.

155 PSI is pretty good compression on those saws.

My guess is that it's a Tillotson HS.  Very impressive results for a 56cc saw with a bare aluminum jug.  Will be eagerly watching this one.:D

I used to run the Tilley HS off a 272 on my Partner 5000 49cc racesaw.  Love those carbs.

I prefer them over the SDC's on the Homelite models that had were built with either of the two carbs.

oh i don't race saws i just use them. got talked into both "shows" over a couple of beers by a couple of friends. i just rather have the saw that out cuts theirs :) and if it's a mature saw that looks like its been used and abused and near death so be it ;)

didn't use the 3700 at the time due to the fact it was too nice a saw to tinker with. did a proper muffler mod and it was good to go. sold it a while back to an older gentleman who liked the countervibes. and i have a couple of nos topends for the 3400's. if i slipped, no biggie, try again. :)

back in post #2 or 3 i stated 8deg. timing advance. misprint! it should say 3 deg. i guess fingers and eyes don't agree on everything all the time :-X

here's a couple more pics of the intake block. they need alot of material removed to flow.

this with the stock carb and a good muffler mod is a huge inprovement over all. these saws just need to flow smoother.

Wow you took alot off the intake, I am always afraid of getting that plastic to thin.    How about the divider where the intake meets on the cylinder.  Did you modify that also.

no point to this thread. just like them. :)
had this one given to me last week. friends neighbor upgraded after he couldn't figure how to get it to run properly. it was very dirty when i recieved it. the top end is like new, not realy many hours on it. she was packed full to the brim with dust and oil. the carb was no good as the guy cranked the low jet in so tight it broke the little tip off and wedged it tight into the carb body, plus the screw he was using to hold the airfilter/cover on was too long and ended up crushing the diaphragm cover in. i didn't have the "correct" carb from one of these. so i ended up using a carb off of a mcculloch titan 57. :-* i had to switch over the throttle and choke shafts, and drill the hole for the pulde in the back of the carb, but it was all pretty easy stuff. i also used the fuel pump side cover off the original carb to get rid of the tube for the impulse line. the throttle plate is about .020 bigger than the stocker, the choke side is much bigger. had to make room for it in the top cover and make a new extension to hold the seal foam in place. got rid of the base gasket, and ended up with 26thou squish, and 140psi. compression. add a muffler mod and crank seals and she's good to go. very strong runner.
had to make a choke handle for it too ;D
