I know on my 395 I have a chain brake and a cover without the brake.   The brake makes the saw a lot heavier and it does not clear the chips as well when noodling.   So I put my cover without the brake on.

Dang, I just sold my 3400. Had I seen this thread first I might of kept it... Good stuff!

One thing about 3400 is that there are plenty of them out there.
And they are cheap so is the 3700's.

Hi Steve

My 3400 has a chainbrake but it seems to have very little movement when compared to others.  It also seems to rub on the clutch so I was wondering if I would just get a plain clutch cover and be done with it.  Saw runs well otherwise.

Lee

Lee I'll trade you a non-CB clutch cover for that CB cover.

the carb was no good as the guy cranked the low jet in so tight it broke the little tip off and wedged it tight into the carb body, plus the screw he was using to hold the airfilter/cover on was too long and ended up crushing the diaphragm cover in. i didn't have the "correct" carb from one of these. so i ended up using a carb off of a mcculloch titan 57. :-* i had to switch over the throttle and choke shafts, and drill the hole for the pulde in the back of the carb, but it was all pretty easy stuff. i also used the fuel pump side cover off the original carb to get rid of the tube for the impulse line. the throttle plate is about .020 bigger than the stocker, the choke side is much bigger. had to make room for it in the top cover and make a new extension to hold the seal foam in place. got rid of the base gasket, and ended up with 26thou squish, and 140psi. compression. add a muffler mod and crank seals and she's good to go. very strong runner.

3000 FPS has been trying to assist me in modifying my Red 3.7 trying to explain in great detail how to turn the flow through the transfers to the intake side. Now I don't know when or how I came across  the photo but is this the trick in turning the flow? And how would you address the T/P closest to the intake side as this photo doesn't show this step. I've ported 4 cycle motorcycle heads but the 2 cycle stuff is totally different. Does  feathering the transfer guide or ring guide have any benefit towards flow gains.Since the 3400 and 3700 series have the same cylinder I figured  I'd post my question here.

That is an interesting photo.  I have not seen that one before.   The transfer port that is close to the intake port looks like it turns up some.   I would not raise the transfer ports unless you put a degree wheel on the cylinder and work out the timing numbers.   I would just shape the tops of both transfer ports the same.

Looks like someone did some nice work on that cylinder.
