Also on the opposite side of the metering diaphragm is the fuel pump diaphragm that also has small check valves.   Make sure you have that in the correct order with the gasket.  Also make sure the surface is clean and smooth where the fuel pump diaphragm mates up to the carb.

  Be careful running a wire through orifices one of them is the high speed check valve and you could cause it to leak back into the low speed side.
