Hi guys - newbie to the forum here...hoping to glean info from you folks on repair and upkeep on my OLD Craftsman chainsaw...Here is some history to my current chainsaw issue:

I have an OLD craftsman chainsaw, model 358352070 with the WA-19A carb. I inherited this from my father in law after his passing. Tried to start it - no dice. Took it apart and found it had been sitting YEARS (probably had fuel in it too but has long since dried up). I replaced the intank filter and fuel line - old line was broken and brittle & cleaned the tank completely, and lastly I put in a new spark plug too. its still not starting unless I prime the carb with a bit of fresh fuel...SO,  I disassembled the carb and soaked it in acetone for 48 hours, then run thin wire thru all the ports I could find; blew compressed air thru them too; then finished it off with carb cleaner. I put in a new carb rebuild kit and installed back on the motor - it still will not start unless I prime it thru the carb with a bit of fuel. it now runs until the fuel is exhausted then dies. It will not start again unless I prime it again. I'm certain I've installed the kit correctly and set the needle/seat assembly as per instructions. I'm at a loss here and could use some input.

Sounds as though it is not pumping at all or else the metering needle never opens?

After a starting episode, the carb has fuel inside the pumping chamber, it is the metering valve. If the pumping chamber is dry, it is your impulse path.

You can also check it with a MightyVac if the carb has leaks, if the metering valve holds, and that the metering valve will pop-off

If there is a plugged area in the fuel distribution area, you will generally have the engine idle but no high speed or high speed and no idle.
We should share what we know... someone may learn...

I dont think this carb is one of them and not your issue. But using high pressure air can ruin some carbs.

Sounds like the carb is not drawing fuel.    I would check the impulse passage in the carb and on the saw itself where the impulse comes from.   If the metering diaphragm was in the wrong order I believe it would be flooding.

Also on the opposite side of the metering diaphragm is the fuel pump diaphragm that also has small check valves.   Make sure you have that in the correct order with the gasket.  Also make sure the surface is clean and smooth where the fuel pump diaphragm mates up to the carb.

  Be careful running a wire through orifices one of them is the high speed check valve and you could cause it to leak back into the low speed side.

I assume you remove the old Welch plug and cleaned the low speed circuit/orifices?

no - did not replace the welch plug - there wasn't one in the kit to replace it with...I did clean all the orifices that I could see - I did use thin copper wire to run thru the passages and finished off with carb cleaner and compressed air...I hope neither of them damaged the carb but I guess we will find out...right after I replace the broken starter rope... *sigh*   :-[

I would not remove that welsh plug unless you know what your doing.  You can wash out that circuit through the low side jet with brake clean.  Hit the holes in the throttle bore with a thin copper wire bent to look like a number 7.

Check your gasket and diaphragm order as well as your metering lever height.  Did you replace the inlet needle?  Use a wet q-tip shaft to clean the seat.  Your best bet for a spray cleaner on these carbs is non chlorinated brake clean.

Here is the diagram for the WA-19;

Sharkey - I replaced everything except the seat in the carb - I did check the height too and its set according the the instructions that came with the rebuild kit...
