top rpm, no load

  Does anyone know what the top rpm, no load is for my Craftsman 358.360280 , 42cc/18" bar. It is identical to a PP262 , or a 2375 LE Type 2, Wild Thang. Up to now I've been tuning the carb by ear, but I'm looking for a wireless tach to do it right.

  Also can anyone recommend an affordable wireless tach?       Speaking of a Wild Thang what does the LE mean?

  Appreciate any info.

I use the tiny tach or tech tach. I don't remember which one now. It's around $80. I have no clue on the rpm.

I tune them by ear very rich to where they four stroke (flutter sound) then I lean them out to where they transition to two stroke (Smoother sound). Then I richen them back up to where they are just beginning to four stroke again.

This is where I've always tuned them to (while free running). When you get the chain into the tree and it starts cutting, the four stroking will change into two stroking (smooth pulling).

That's where you make the most safe power and the saw runs as cool as possible and is lubricated good.

Some of the newest Stratocharged saws do not always change from four stroking to two stroking so clearly as the older chainsaws. With these  you may need to tune by tach?

660 magnums method will ensure a good long life for your aluminum cylinder. Lean condition is what kills them. You want aluminum cylinder as rich as possible without 4 cycling in the wood.

Speaking of a Wild Thang what does the LE mean?
I'm afraid it means Low Emissions, which likely translates into a cat muffler.  And depending on the year probably some more restrictive porting and a slightly larger combustion chamber (I recently measure the port timing on one of the engines from that vintage - it was interesting)

The good news is that you can get one of the early 2-piece mufflers and use it with the heat shield that comes with the cat muffler.  That allows you to cut out a pretty big opening at the back corner.

I have a tach and never use it anymore for tuning.   I only use it for comparisons before and after a modification to a saw.
PP 505, 475, 445.
