I used to cut 16" buried on one side and go around to other side to finish it up on what was left. This was hardwoods.
I don't usually have to deal with very much over 20" actually.  And the hardest woods I have are sugar maple and cherry.  The cherry is almost always 16" or under on my land.

I also have an 18" bar coming for redmax.
