I remember being in that type of cold in MT in the 80's.  -80 to -100 F wind chills if I remember right.  I could just be full of chit, but that is what my ole brain is telling me.
I can remember a cold snap hitting Montana in '90, it was warmish in the morning, a few puddles around from the melting snow, then by that afternoon it dropped to -30F and  the next morning it was -40F with a windchill on top of that drop the temp even further. Classes where cancelled at MSU in Bozeman for the first time in history. Most of the students that were from the ranches in the state went home to help with the cattle. Glad I live in Queensland now
