Hey guys, sorry for the late update. The event went good even though it was -50 below with a strong windchill out of the northwest. :o
We set up early and the wind chill was brutal, was going to call it off but a good crowd of competitors showed up and said "let's do it". Only 2 carvers showed up and they carved for the whole day.
Had to pull start my Yamaha 3000 generator for the 1st time as the battery didn't have enough jam, even had 5-30 synthetic in the engine.

I'm just trying to round up some photos as my photographer didn't show up until almost towards the end, I was too busy and forgot about takong pics.

But with all the cold and all those two little Husqvarna 550's ran perfect for the whole day. Couldn't believe how well those little saws ran. No heated carbs ,just the pre heaters kits installed. We were cutting 8"x8" spruce and those saws looked pretty impressive 8)
My daughter just sent me this pic of the competition from last February.  Notice the back wall of the stage with a strong wind behind it tethered by a rope . -55 F. below windchill. Cloud of steam from the pulp mill in the background. :o

I remember being in that type of cold in MT in the 80's.  -80 to -100 F wind chills if I remember right.  I could just be full of chit, but that is what my ole brain is telling me.

I have never been in weather that cold and don't want to be.    I am surprised your breath was not freezing.

Just goes to prove how well designed pro chainsaws are to run in these conditions.  Same goes with the saw chain.  8)

Yes we are tough northerners.
At the same time my chainsaw competition was on there was a family ice fishing contest just behind my stage on the Saskatchewan  River.

Very cold. brrrrrrrr

Friend on  vacation in MT showed me pics yesterday of 7 inches of snow at the pass.  Brings back the memories in their pics.

Info posted on that ice fishing pic = Ice Fishing in the Freezing Cold

The girls took part in the family ice fishing contest at the mouth of the Opasquia and Saskatchewan Rivers. This was an hour long endeavour in what ended up being -52 (with the wind chill) temperatures. Out of our 33 girls, there were 12 fish caught and some money won. It was pretty exciting for everyone (iincluding the other contestants

I can remember a cold snap hitting Montana in '90, it was warmish in the morning, a few puddles around from the melting snow, then by that afternoon it dropped to -30F and  the next morning it was -40F with a windchill on top of that drop the temp even further. Classes where cancelled at MSU in Bozeman for the first time in history. Most of the students that were from the ranches in the state went home to help with the cattle. Glad I live in Queensland now

Well reviving this old thread to show how serious I'm taking retirement, Lol.
This coming Saturday would have been my 21st Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival Logger Sports that I would have run.
But my team back in my old home town reassures me they can pull it off.

3 years ago I donated my fold up stage trailer, PA system and all other equipment to the Festival.
This winter festival is one of the oldest if not the oldest in Canada originating in 1916.
And yes they had powersaw contests back in the late 1940's into the 1950's.
Here's some pics from last year, with a windchill between -30 to -40 below I like to call it the "Survivor Series".  That's my daughter Tina cutting in the bottom pic of the poster, she hasn't missed a competition since 1998.
How about carving a eagle in 4 hours in those -40 temps, like Rick Hall did?
