Saw Mill
« on: February 26, 2018, 08:38:50 pm »
So I decided to get a chainsaw mill and found one on line.

This is new to me but I have done a lot of reading so all went well for a first time.

The rail guide I built myself which worked out great.

Those logs are 4 ft long.    I had read where MDAVlEE or Mike recommended using square chain so I took one of my used chains and square ground it.

The first cut off the top only took about 60 seconds to get through.    Then as I got deeper into the log it then slowed down to about 90 seconds to get through it.

By the time I made the last cut I could tell it was slowing down and needed sharped again.

The logs are beetle kill lodge pole pine.   They a around 14" wide at the center of the log.

This is the 505 with the Stihl piston in it.     Tachs out at around 14,000 with bar and chain on.

This saw I have used for stumping on old dead elm trees and now for this.   It is the strongest out all of my other Poulan 505's or J=red 2083's that I have.

Sounds like it went through it pretty good. 15 seconds per foot is great.

Well it is just pine but it cut pretty good.     After about 4 slices though I could tell the chain was starting to dull and I was applying pressure to it.

If a guy could clean his logs with a pressure washer or a chainsaw attachment that can debark... a chain would stay sharp so much longer.
Main reason I like to mill lumber from a tree felled on the spot.
Making a living with a saw since age 16.

When I cut the logs I only cut the ones I can get my tractor to and pick up with the loader and carry to my stands. I cut them 8'6" 10'6" and 12'6". So far I haven't had to drag any.

Looks like I got quite a few that SP beetles has killed, I hate it too, rather have the trees than the lumber

This year when I go back up into the mountains I will try and get some longer logs.    I believe 8 ft is the longest that they will allow.    That is long enough to make a picnic table.

These that I cut are right here at my house and I'm cutting them for a 12 x 20 building I need to get built.

I made my rail guide out of 1 x 4's about 16' long, works ok but I couldn't carry it very far, I bring the log to it

Here's a picture of my guide, Yours is much better than mine
