Solo with Husky ?
« on: August 31, 2014, 11:57:43 am »
Just read this about solo on a website.  Any truth to it? I cant think  of any saws from back then.

The Solo company was founded by two brothers, Hans and Heinz Emmerich in 1948. They began to develop a small two stroke engine with the intention to power small portable machines. Weighing only 14.3 pounds or 6.48 Kilogram it was able to produce an incredible 1.2 hp. The two brothers continued on with the development of mist blowers, lawn mowers and cultivators to name a few. In 1977 the Solo company signed a three year contract with Husqvarna to supply chain saws to consumers. These chainsaws were sold wordwide under the Husqvarna name with private labels.

News to me, and I have doubts that this is accurate. More than a little odd that none of us would have heard about it before, don't you think? If there's any truth to it, the US must not have been involved. I don't understand the "under the Husqvarna name with private labels" statement either??????????

Only private labeling that I'm aware of Solo doing was for Homelite; producing the 290 and 340. But that was more 80's than 70's from what I remember.

It was on a older chainsaw testing selling site  selling solo's.  That was just part of the paragraph on the 681 675 665 being sold at the time.

I remember some solo 651 or 650 or something in dark green rebadged as craftsman.

Thanks Spike. I knew if any info on this you would have it.  ;)

Found it in solo history just now. Look at 1977   http://www.solousa.com/history/history6.htm

What is that saw in pic?

Another site stating the same.  http://www.chainsawreviews-online.com/solo-products/

Solo products expanded existing facilities along with building completely new ones. To help sustain this growth, Solo signed legal contract in 1977, producing the small hand held Solo chainsaw intended for Husqvarna by private-label. This device would certainly complement Husqvarna existing line of expert sized chainsaws along with other yard devices.

Didnt Solo sell a few saws through Sears Craftsman labeled as 'Professional'?  This was way after the 70's though, more like after 2000.

Echo did this too making product for John Deere, Toro, TechnicTool, Lesco, Little Wonder and Im sure other brands that I cant recall right now.  Echo did buy out TechnicTool and Little Wonder in the 2000's.

Oh Lord, one of those things! Not a saw that would make anyone's "must have" list. Good thing the contract was only for 3 years. :)

If I remember right, the Solo version was called the 641. And there was also a smaller cc model; something like a 634??? Solo was still selling those things into the 1990's.

Good job on the research Kevin!

I just remember the dark green solo being  labeled craftsman. Like a 651 or something. I have pics here in a thread of it. I passed on one for $75.
