Stihl 020 avpe ignition
« on: September 15, 2021, 01:24:35 pm »
From my research so far, this saw has a 2 piece transistor ignition. The trigger unit is behind the flywheel and the coil is outside of the flywheel. Is there a way to test both components?Saw has  no spark. Also wondering if parts are available. I haven't gotten the engine out of the all metal "clamshell" yet to check for loose screws, bad wires and grounds. Saw is apart to the point where engine should come out , but something is thwarting my effort. I don't have a shop manual for this 1114 series saw. Any tips or help would be much appreciated. This model was made from'74 to '76. I've been told these were nice saws for 32cc.

The link Ray sent me was extremely helpful. Unfortunately it only addressed points style ignition. I need info on the transistor style ignition. I read somewhere that the trigger unit is what normally goes bad. This is the worst saw I have ever worked on.
Does anyone have any experience with this series saw? I have a bad feeling parts will be hard to come by. I plan on checking with Chainsawr when I have a complete list of parts I need. Any help is appreciated.

look way down into the saw behind the muffle on the top left side
you will see a hidden screw that needs to  come out
also the new trigger is mounted to one of the hold down screws
on the coil .They are availible from a stihl dealer and will eliminate
the points. They work great! I have an 020av super with that setup

President, thanks for the reply. I got the engine out of the fuel tank/fan/flywheel cover. I had all the screws removed, but the impulse line, fuel line, and rubber boot were holding me up. This saw is the professional electronic model with rear handle , and supposed to have a transistor ignition. This saw shouldn't have points.

I don't have the correct flywheel puller, so does anyone have an alternate method ?

President, did you have to remove the flywheel even tho the new trigger mounted to the coil?
