028 ignition problem
« on: February 22, 2014, 09:42:18 pm »
I picked up a non running saw from my brother. It will only fire enough for a pop and an occasional 5 second run. The spark is weak and intermittent , I was thinking to replace the points with a Nova module so I won't have to pull the flywheel . The spark will only jump an 1/8" gap . I adjusted the air gap with  a business card and the spark was a little stronger  but not good enough. Should I put in the Nova module and a new coil?

Get a good used coil off of an 029/ms290, it is electronic, just cut the wire to the points, hook up the kill wire, and go cut wood!

More than likely if you just burnish and re set the points it will work .More times than not problems with a points type ignition are  on the low voltage portion of the circuit .

I would like to burnish and reset the points today , but I don't have a flywheel puller.  If it doesn't  come off easy, I'll have to get a puller. Any idea what the points gap is?

The 029/ms290 coil is a great idea, didn't know it could be used.

Yes that coil is found on most of the mid range saws, the great thing is you don't have with trying to remove the flywheel.

I looked on both the big orange book and the micro fiche and couldn't find a thing on points gap .I assume about 18 thou would do it though .I found it interesting the max advance on a solid state ignition is 30 degrees at 8,000 rpm .

Oh probabley the 029 would be a better deal especially if it's a self advancer .I don't find points a big deal but a lot of folks do .At least with a solid state it either works or it doesn't .
