028 super oiler.
« on: January 11, 2013, 09:01:00 pm »
I am working on a 028 super.  I have the saw running real well but the chain oiler I cannot get it to work.

What I have done so far.
1.   Took the pump off and took it apart and cleaned it in an ultrasonic cleaner oiled it and put it back together.
2.   Pulled the hose inside the tank off and checked it and the screen and it looks good screen is clear.
3.    Checked the valve for venting the oil tank and it is ok.

What I am not sure of does the hose in the tank where it attaches go down to where the pump is and through the pump and then up to the orifice where the bar oiler outlet is.

There appears to be two openings for the oil pump one I believe is an intake and one is the output to where the bar oiler is.   Does this sound right to you guys.

Well sometimes persistance pays off.   I have working now.

I took the hose off from inside the tank and put a vacume line on it and then blew it out with about 30 psi from that end.   I then put it all back together put oil back in it and then pressurized the oil tank.  I let sit for about 30 minutes came and checked it and the oil had passed through the pump and out to where the hole is for the bar.  I then released the pressure and cleaned up the oil and started the saw and it is pumping as nice as can be.

I am wondering now if the pump needed to be primed and would not work due to alot of air in the lines and pump.  Anyone ever have to prime a pump to get it to work?

I  have had to prime other oilers in the past.  I think some service manuals even say to prime.

In the winter time it sometimes takes some 10w-30 or kerosene to get the pump started pumping.

Running below 20 degrees I just use 10w-30 motor oil in the bar oil tank anyway. It stihl pours like molasses.

Whatever, don't thin bar oil with gasoline. The resulting vapor pressure and flash point makes for a potentially dangerous explosive situation.

FWIW the oil pumps of the 028,038, 042 and 048 are all the same  in case you need to replace one .The good news is they seldom go bad .

I need some help here. How did you get the oiler off. Is there anything special besides the 2 scews.  I located the leak on mine and its coming right from the oiler but I can't get the thing off.

I forgot had to go look at mine.  Two screws and it should lift off.  There is a gasket underneath that gets real hard from heat that it could be stuck to.
