028AV
« on: February 27, 2014, 10:46:48 am »
Don't want to hijack the other thread on the 028. I have one that came in the other day after falling off a roof. Needs a new tank handle unit. Guy said do what ever else it needs. Any advice on these saws would appreciated.

Take care there, there were so many variations, and they are not listed anywhere, if you buy the wrong part, your customer would not want to eat the cost.

I have a lot of old 028 carcasses laying around, and not one of them is the same as one of the others.  That is why I haven't tried to e-bay them, as well as
other Stihl models like the 041, 031 etc.....

Thanks Fish, I've got $50 in a used 028 metal tank handle. Which I thought I would be OK with, since the saw I have has a metal tank handle unit. So, I guess we will see! Any other thoughts on what may also be a cluster f$%k on this saw?

The only one of those I have worked on was a 028 super.   Just like Fish mentioned there seemed to be several versions of it and I had to really figure out the parts for it.   One of the differences was the gear set up for the oiler.   Other then the different versions pretty straight forward.

Like Fish said, there are tons of differences in that series of saw. A great saw. I haven't encountered any differences in the saws that have metal handles though. One metal handle always seemed to fit another metal handled saw. I would be willing to wager any metal handle will fit that saw. Anything else and you're on your own.

Any of that series has variations ,028,the 3 models of 038,042 and 048 .The IPL of the 028 is shall we say rather lengthy .Which is not to say you can't find parts you just have to find the right parts .
