Stihl 041av ran out of gas
« on: December 31, 2012, 04:48:43 pm »
I am fairly new to chainsaws and new to the forum. I recently purchased an on 041av in good running condtion. The other day I was cutting up some fire wood and ran it completely out of gas. I refilled it and now I can't get it started. Most 2 cycle engines I've had in the past have a priming bulb but not this one. From what I can find this has an impulse pump on it and no other way of priming the carb. I can get it started by pouring a little fuel in the carb but it won't stay running. Has spark, and compression but no gas.
I appreciate any help, thanks.

You will need to go back to basics . . .

Spark

Compression

Fuel - is the spark plug wet?

You need to prime the fuel system. Close the choke, set the high idle by squeezing the trigger and pushing the button on the side of the handle then release the trigger while holding the button. Pull the rope two or three times until you hear it burp. Open the choke and pull again without touching the throttle. Once it starts bump the throttle to return to normal idle.

As far as the basics are concerned, it has fuel in the tank, it has compression, and it has spark (it will run if a put a few drops in the carb).  I'm thinking I may just buy a rebuild kit. I did the usual choke on pulls. It never bumped. I thought I flooded it so I called it quits for the day. Next morning tried the same thing, no bump, ever, but I got a good workout. Poured a little gas in the carb and it fired right up but died after a couple seconds. I'm sure it is just not getting gas trough the carb diaphragm pump system. I took the carb off and peeked into the side covers, the diaphragms looked intact, but no fuel is getting there. I sucked a little fuel out of the line so fuel is getting to the carb but thats it.

After one of these carbs is rebuild how do you prime it? It is a Tillotson (HS?).

Don't forget the impulse line?

I don't recall the lay downs having an external impulse line. There should be a passage through the gaskets and insulator block an air leak here will cause hard starting but the op stated the saw had been running well up to that point. There is a screen under the fuel pump cover, if your saw has a flock fuel filter the screen may be plugged.

If it will fire on a prime and die the carb is not pumping fuel for whatever reason usually .That usually ,usually is a carb in need of a rebuild .

To all those how chimed in, thanks.  I was tinkering with the carb today and and took it apart. everything looks good and clean. I know the previous owner of the saw and I don't think it saw a terribly high amount of action, probably just a few window cutouts for remodels and a few trees now and then. I rinsed the inside with a little gas and then before I put it back together I filled up the areas that hold fuel with some gas. When I put it back on the saw I blew a little air pressure on the tank cap to bring the fuel all the way through the line to the carb. Took it outside and it started right up like normal. I choked it and it bumped on the first pull, choke off and started first pull. It seems to run better now too. If there is a small hole in one of the diaphragms then I'd imagine it might get starved for gas after some use. I'm still going to order a carb kit soon to get new gaskets and diaphragms.
Anyway, thanks again.
