034 tune up kit and background.
« on: August 01, 2013, 02:55:35 pm »
My first "official" post here.

I bought a project saw.  It is an 034 that was missign some parts, needed some additional parts and just plain needed gone through.  It was missing bolts, starter assembly, throttle linkage, broken throttle trigger, bare kill switch wires, terribly crappy air filter, oil fill cap, etc.  I am sure it needs the carb rebuilt and all new lines. Hence, the question lower in the post.

It has a good piston as seen through the exhaust port and appears to have good compression, but as you can see it is FAR from a beauty queen.  It did come with a spare cyclinder (out of 036 -48mm), but it has some transfer, but it will likely clean up.  I have sourced some used parts from chainsawr and some from the local stihl dealer.  but i still have more to go as the allowance permits with out impacting the beer money!  : )

SOOOO, has anyone ever run one of these kits from Hutzl on eBay?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/281051399831?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D281051399831%26_rdc%3D1

The kit kit comes with an air and fuel filter, fuel line, impulse line spark plug, decomp valve and pull hande.

For $16, it is tempting just for the air filter. I need 5 of the seven peices listed, but am a little gun shy on the Hong Kong origin... Hutzl is the brand

If you have purchased this or similar kits, what was the quality and would you buy it again? I probably already know the answer, but i am asking.   With the price of it, it is extremely tempting to at least try it.

Hey Welcome to the site.

For $16 I would have to try one out myself.  Heck I paid $10 for a AFM de-comp.

I give people 3 choices when I repair or rebuild saws. Redneck reusing and cleaning up old parts when usable with cost in mind using AFM to keep cost down, aftermarket and  oem.

I would be interested in trying out these kits myself or if someone gives me the ok to use the aftermarket stuff on their saw.

I have used AFM seals with good results (heard some bad stories too).  Have used gaskets, rings, de-comps, air filters etc.

Just so you know. Sometimes Northwood Saw carries the aftermarket stuff you are looking for, but already here in US.  http://www.northwoodsaw.com/store/

The only reason i would not use it is due to potential failure due to air leak.  Where are three of the about 6 places a saw can leak air....  impulse and fuel line and the air filter.   Those are the three main pieces that i would use from this kit  I would hate to put the money i am putting into this jsut to cheap out on three of the parts that can effectively kill this saw by creating lean running condition.

http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=249

http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=248

Is one for an earlier 034 or what?

thabnks for the link, those are decent prices compared to my local shop.

I used used small diameter fuel line for the impulse line on my MS 250, but wouldn't have thought about thise for the fuel situation.  Must need to find fuel line with the OD the same as the ID of the previous line +/-?

What is the redneck repair for the kill switch wire on the 034 when the insulation is completely gone?  Dealer wants $12 for the two wires...totaling about a foot long!

I use shrink wrap from HF on bare wires.  Hair dryer shrunk it right down on the wire tight.

i found the best place for good quality heat shrink is a good hobby store. most of the time they have more choices of size, length, colors, firmness and thicknesses than any other place that carries heat shrink tubing.

here's 1 online hobby place to look:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0095p?FVPROFIL=&FVSEARCH=HEAT+SHRINK++tubing+&search=Go

although they don't have the long lengths, most repairs can be covered from what they do have.
when I grow up, i wanna be an adult.
