Probably look at a lot things on it. I'll probably ahead and clean inside part of the sprocket drum and clutch shoes etc. with carb cleaner. Just not 100% convinced yet that its crank bearings yet.

This is the usual situation . . . . Take your time and look and feel closely.

I have taken a clean white cloth or napkin and wiped around in the combustion chamber looking for evidence of small metal filings?

The first thing that happens with a bad bearing is the cage that separates the balls goes out and the little parts go up through the top of the engine.

Also if the bearing gets any slop or the cage is gone and the balls all get on one side of the bearing is that the rod hits the bottom of the crankcase.

This all makes little metal pieces.

I think it may be because your rings have started to seat and is building compression. Since you say it's on the compression stroke. (Al, I feel the same way, you can't be stingy with the oil when you replace a piston or jug, lots of smoke after a rebuild is good.)
FEAR NO TREE. FEAR GOD.

I used Dexron as an assembly oil once. The chainsaw smoked real good at first.

So how much more use do I need to get out of it before the rings find there seated spot.

If you pull the muffler and look at the rings, you can see if they are seated all the way across or just in spots? You are looking for the up-down marks on the rings.

Ok. Another thing that comes to mind on this issue is that hard pull with the cracking sound only happens when trying to pull the rope all the way out. If I just pull the rope about 4-6in to bump the saw over then all I hear is that thump noise when bumping it on a short rope pull.

It could just be grit in the rewind spring but being as you have established suspicion of the engine itself, I would do a little looking around? It would be a good exorcise in evaluating a unknown chainsaw in the future?

Looked at this issue. Flywheel will turn freely by hand. I finally got it to hang up in the recoil while recoil was off when pulling string out and letting it back in. Now it I hear something rubbing on the starter pulley. It sounds like someone ran there finger nails down chalk board when pulling the rope and letting it back in. Plus one of recoil screws is stuck in the brass bushing. I had to drive the whole screw and bushing out remove the screw.
