First of all I just love the 036, MS360, & MS361 Stihl chainsaws

The 036 and MS360 are a lot alike. The cylinder intake transfers are the, old school, in the cylinder wall, closed ports with a windowed piston. A tried and true setup used in many pro chainsaws of different brands in the late 20th Century. This setup possibly no longer has the blessing of the EPA? A tried and true design that produces excellent torque.

The MS361 has more modern porting whereas the transfers extend partially into the base flange of the cylinder. (sort of a half and half compromise?) It stihl has a windowed piston. But more acceptable to the EPA?

The MS362 is more or less a Strato Saw with a timed air charge entering the cylinder between the exhaust and intake events. This one most probably makes the EPA very happy?
