036 Pro vs. Late Model Variants
« on: April 09, 2014, 12:18:07 am »
Debated starting this since it's similar to my other one but this is strictly 036 PRO and variants.  This may be my new bread and butter saw so want I want to learn as much as I can on it and the newer versions(360, 361, 362, etc) Judging by the specs, the later models have gained weight and lost power. Does this seem an accurate statement? Do the new ones offer ANY advantages beyond being newer? Does the older 036 PRO offer structural advantages due to design and/or materials used?

I really liked the 036 pro and the 361 I had.   If I was hunting 036, 360, 361 would be my choices.

361 if I remember right was coil spring AV , quad port and 59cc.  IMO 361 needs muffler mod from get go.  Stock no muffler mod on some other 361's were less then expected.

362, is NOT what I would be after. Nice saw but too heavy and under powered for the weight. 036 or 360 would be my choice in a pinch a 361. Done a lot of work on 362s just trying to get them to go as well as a stock 361. Now I guess that I can wait for contrary opinions but that is MHO!

I really like my 361. It's a great saw, not too heavy and good power with a simple muffler mod. Never ran an 036 though.

Thanks for the replies. Contrary opinions are fine. If we all agreed all the time that'd just be no fun at all. Yeah, I'm really leaning towards trying to find a nice, lightly used 036 Pro or make a deal on that 034 Super if it looks real good. I'll compare it to the 6401 I have on the way and decide what my go-to saw will be. I love looking at my list of saws but it's impractical and they just take up to much space. I took this little 024 in on trade with a 390. The 390 was my focus, used it maybe 3 times and use the 024 every time out and all day long. Love that 024! ;D

First of all I just love the 036, MS360, & MS361 Stihl chainsaws

The 036 and MS360 are a lot alike. The cylinder intake transfers are the, old school, in the cylinder wall, closed ports with a windowed piston. A tried and true setup used in many pro chainsaws of different brands in the late 20th Century. This setup possibly no longer has the blessing of the EPA? A tried and true design that produces excellent torque.

The MS361 has more modern porting whereas the transfers extend partially into the base flange of the cylinder. (sort of a half and half compromise?) It stihl has a windowed piston. But more acceptable to the EPA?

The MS362 is more or less a Strato Saw with a timed air charge entering the cylinder between the exhaust and intake events. This one most probably makes the EPA very happy?

I have two 036 pro's that are in very nice shape, one is bone stock the other I muffler modded.    I like the saws but the muffler modded one definitely runs better.    I will eventually get around to pulling the cylinder and clean up the ports and lose the base gasket.    The two I have are keepers.

Yeah, that seems to be the problem finding well kept 036's, nobody wants to part with them. :( I have found a 034 Super here local but he wants to much and it's a pawn shop so not sure whether he'd be agreeable to letting me remove the muffler for inspection, and doing a compression test.
