SEM 056 Mag 2 Coil needed
« on: February 21, 2018, 04:13:42 pm »
Anyone have a known working SEM coil from an 045/056 they'd like to part with?

I'm restoring an 056 Mag 2 that arrived with a borked coil (appears retaining bolt on coil came loose under the flywheel while running).
Through the FB Chainsaw Repair Forum I was pointed to the SEM coils found on TS360 demo saws.
I procured a parts saw that still had the coil on it. Matched in part numbers too.
Installed in the 056 and still no spark.
**ground wire was removed to eliminate that shorting out as many have mentioned**
Flywheel mag is still strong

Secondary to coil frame measures as 1.425Kohms
Secondary to kill switch wire measures 1.415Kohms
Spark plug lead offers nearly no measurable resistance.

Interestingly enough, same measurements on destroyed coil....

Looks like I have two bad coils now.
The crank isn't lobed, so I can't convert to the Bosch points setup.

Thanks!

Turns out I don't need one!
I baked my old coil at 250F for an hour and brought it back to life!!

When Stihl brought the Mag2 out they went from 5mm screws holding the ignition plate down to 4mm screws(What a stupid idea),these commonly came loose, the flywheel sheared the heads off and sometimes maimed the ignition module. Even if the module wasn't damaged trying to easy-out a 4mm screw was hard. Use a little blue loctite on them or better yet drill and tap them out to 5mm.

Mike, Madsens in Centralia Washington will have lots of those 056 coils.
They were the authority on 056 saws, and sold more of them then any other dealer worldwide.
