038 Magnum, scary to start
« on: April 02, 2013, 02:50:34 pm »
I have an 038 Magnum that runs great, IF you can start it. sometimes you pull and pull and get zip Sometimes it fires and yanks your shoulder out
of joint ! IT is scary to yank on the rope ! Don"t see any way to retard the timing a little. No points. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks, doc2358

First of all rebuild the carb.Secondly buy a Stihl 460 rescue saw D-handle which is only 5 or 6 bucks .

That Bing carb takes about 8 maybe 10 pulls to get the gas to the carb if it has sat a while .Once you get it started unless something is really wrong with it the next series of starts 90 percent of the time it will light off the first pull .

I still laugh when good ole Fred ,AKA Stihl Boy pulled over my souped 038 Mag to check the compression on it and it about ripped his hand off .I scolded him ,that's what the D- handle is on it for .Pull that pup over like you mean it ,Don't play with or else it will come back hard on you .

Thanks Al! I'll get a D- handle and try again. It started fine yesterday 4/5/13. My wifes uncle was named AL Smith and he was a small eng. mechanic.

I just ordered 10 of the D handles PN: 1128 195 3401.  They were $5 but they have gone up a tad (like everthing else has) dealers said around $6 now.  I put em on my keepers.
