028 WB repair
« on: October 23, 2013, 09:39:08 pm »
Hey guys,
Starting on my next project it's a 038 wood boss with plastic tanks. I took the side covers off to start cleaning
and noticed a lot of oil and saw dust build up on the flywheel side and under the dust cover on the clutch side
looks like the crank seals may be leaking. So what tool do I use to remove the seals so I can replace them
and where can I find the flywheel puller tool?

The flywheel puller is M22 1.5 thread I think .Easy enough to jerk a seal with a drywall screw .Use a stout ice pick, thin prick punch and punch a tiny hole in the metal part .Screw a couple turns of the screw in and  pull it out .Best not to use a drill because you could get metal shavings in the bearing ,not good .

I've made the pullers from metric hydraulic fittings but a few of the folks have found them on the cheap which is not at a Stihl dealer.

Thanks Al,
I will get the flywheel off and use your advice to pull the seal. Is there any chance of nocking the flywheel loose
By loosening the nut and using a socket by hitting it with a hammer?

Sawdust build up is normal in those areas.....especially for an older saw like that. Every 028/038 I've worked on oiled like the BP Horizon
I wouldn't assume the seals are bad unless it gives you probable cause.

Yeah you could knock it loose but you take the chance of harming the bearings .As a general  rule more times than not the seal that leaks would be on the clutch side .

If it were I unless it shows a tendency to run out lean after it's ran a tad bit I wouldn't get concerned about it .Seals don't usually go haywire all at once .You'll have a warning

You guys do have a point I don't really no that the seals are leaking. On the clutch side there isn't any sawdust but
there is a lot of black oil build up behind the clutch cover that I thought may point to a leaking seal. I guess I'll just
clean it up good and run it a while and see what it does. How do you tell if its leaning out on the air fuel mix?

Keep in mind on the clutch side you have bar oil which goes everywhere if the oiler is working .
