Saws before Ser#129583701 are 10mm
Doesn't look right , shouldn't that be 8 numbers?
Reason I said that is I have a 044 here with the angled cylinder head fins and the serial # on it is clearly stamped 19246743.

OK let's get this straight.
So with my 044's 8 digit serial #, should then have a 1 added to my 19246743 serial #
then it would be a 119246743 saw....so that would make my 044 really old?

Here's mine on a 10mm 044AV ;D
Notice my master control switch is black not red.
Now can anyone tell me about my 8 digit serial #? Does this make it a really old 044 compared to the 9 digit 129583701 Adirondackstihl's 044 has?
Or do I add one more 1 to my 19246743 serial #, then it would be 119246743 ?

I would imagine your control switch has been changed at some point with a later one.
My serial number is 127656770
Mine has the + sign in a circle at the start of the number not at the end like yours. Whats also strange is yours is read from looking from the centre of the saw out whereas mines read from looking" from the outside of the saw in" so almost like yours has been stamped the wrong way if that makes sense. Im over the pond in the U.K but cant imagine it would be stamped the opposite way around.
You clearly have an early model as the very first only had 8 digits not 9 hence why the x is listed at the start of the serial number.

The technical bulletein from stihl is dated march 1994 listing the changes that will be made so the 10mm-12mm change was around about that era.

wisecobandit, thanks for your reply.
I'm posting a few pics here, first is my mid 1980's 064 which has the "backwards" serial # . Then the next pic shows my 1992 066 Mag with the todays # position, [BTW the 064 was 9 digits also].

My 8 digit # 044 I bought new in the winter of 1988-'89 one of the very first ones on the market. In July '89 I went to work for Stihl Canada and  I helped spread the seeds of the "new" 044AV, next 2 pics shows a brochure I passed out to dealers and end users.
The 266 and 268XP were the competition at the time in that cc displacement class.
Husqvarna had introduced the 262XP already in 1989 with the latest innovation spring anti vibe and air injection, which made lots of jokes amongst the Stihl reps.
Why Husqvarna  didn't  also make a 72cc big brother of the 262Xp at that same time, I can't figure that one out . Not until around 1995 did the 371XP come out with those features. But 3 years earlier in '92 the 394XP was introduced with springs and air injection.
Also in 1991-92 they introduced the 272XP to compete with the 044, the 272 could have received the springs and air injection just like the 394. The 394/395XP design is still sold today.
Second last pic shows the "true competition" my 1993 272XP and 1980's 044AV.
Speaking of woodcutters, the last pic shows even Canadian beavers are well equipped. :o :D
