064 carb options?
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:26:11 pm »
My 064 has the dreaded Bing 49 carb. It's in need of a rebuild but rebuild kits are very hard to come by. Does anyone have a recommendation for a carb swap that is still being supported? My dealer mentioned the walbro wj65 would work, but a quick ebay search results in Zero for sale. If I search for "stihl 064 carb" I get a couple of hits for various other walbro wj carburetors .

Can anyone recommend a replacement carb for the bing 49?

Just trying to dig up info. Never owned a 064 to know. Only ran friends saw.

stihl 064  WJ-65a   11221200616

Just wondering why would any of the 066 660 carbs  work?  If they are the newer with that air dam on them just put the  old style dia cover on instead.

Just a WAG

Bing 49 carb info  http://www.bingpower.de/download/datenblaetter/type49e.pdf

Question I can find carb kits for bing carb for 038,  different carb then put on 064?  I dont know either of the saws.  (found a post by JJ saying the bing carb on 038 was a bing 48 and is different kit then the oregon 49 kits out there for rebuilding the 48).

Thanks cut4fun. I've seen a few of those wj48 carbs but didn't know what they were for. Based on what you said they are for the pre HD air filter. Can they be converted to work with the HD filter setup?

Sounds like I need to keep my eye open for the wj6a or wj65.

If you would like to run the HD filter set up you will need a new filter base part # 1122 120 3411 and  filter cover part number 1122 140 1001. The part number for the flat metering cover is 1117 121 0800 for the wj-65. The walbro part number for the flat cover is 21-3135. You could also use a wj-67 no limiter caps and is for a 660. Should work well may have to change the fixed jet. You can get a carb for the hd filter set up and use the flat metering cover off the carb you have now. There is also a tillotson carb HS-320A that is a replacement for the wj-67.the tillotson is a fair bit cheaper then the walbro. You can not get the tillotson  from stihl. If you wanted a new carb. Weather the carb is for a 066/660/650 it should work out just fine.

Thanks for all the good info guys! My local dealer had an old wj48 that he gave me to try out.  Does anyone know what the difference was between the wj48 and the 65? My dealer didn't have much info.  Externally they look identical.  Saw seems to run fine after installing it.
