MS-170 / 180
« on: December 14, 2013, 05:07:57 pm »
Can anyone tell me if the cylinder/piston kit for a 180 will fit my ms170 saw? Oddly it seems you can pick up the 180 kit cheaper than the 170.  A little bigger size would be a bonus too.

Many thanks

Lee

The strokes are the same  but the the last number of the cranks are different  170 is a "1" and the 180 is a "2"

Something else must be different for they are listed separately on Ebay with several suppliers for either one?

The cranks are different as 660 stated, the difference is the piston pin size. You would have find a complete engine or a crank. The bearings/seals and the engine pan are the same

A 180 crank assembly is $20 on Ebay if you decide to change yours over

Another angle on a swap is that the early Stihl 018 had a 8mm wrist pin whereas the later 018 & MS180 has the 10mm wrist pin.

Therefore you could get a 38mm 180 cylinder and buy a Meteor piston for a 018 and use your old crank but that would cost more than buying a used crank. You can get a Chinese 38mm piston and rings with a 8mm pin for $18 + $2.75 Shipping on Ebay and that way the price would be about the same.

What do you guys use to wash out a cylinder after cleaning it up with light abrasives?

Thanks,

Lee

I use degreaser and hot water, use a tooth brush to scrub it out then rinse well to get all the degreaser washed out then blow dry with air compressor.

Not well endowed that way so I sprayed it down with brake cleaner.  I will smarm it with oil before pushing that little piston into the cylinder.
