064 needs repair
« on: January 11, 2014, 06:59:22 am »
It's time, and unfortunately my sawmill takes up most of my free time...so I need some recommendations for a repair center that won't take me for a ride.

Older Stihl 064...loosing power in the cut.

Figure I should just have someone competent go through the unit top to bottom and bring her back to 'top-notch' once and for all.  But I'm not sure of the 'quality' of repair services locally.  Just don't want to get taken...if you know what I mean?!?!?

Is there someone close, say within 50 miles that can be depended on to be honest, do great work, and have it finished before I celebrate my 90th birthday!(I'm 47 now)?!?!?!?!  I live in Cabot, Arkansas......thanks!

Central Arkansas?
We should share what we know... someone may learn...

If you cant find someone local, I would imagine one of the porters over on Arboristsite would probably go through it/ clean/ rebuild it for ya. 064's are definitely worth preserving. Mine will never be for sale (at least not under my power), and I tend to sell most saws that aren't bolted down lol.

Central Arkansas....yes.  Cabot is approximately 20miles northeast of Little Rock.

We have a 'dealer' in town, but for many reasons I don't want to do business there(I really don't want to air the dirty laundry here).

Hoping to find someone that can do this project for me soon.  The weather is going to start warming up, and I'd like to be outside finding timber for my sawmill.

having a 'reputable' shop (or any shop) go through that saw top to bottom will cost near as much as a new one. the 064's are one of the pricey stihls to find parts for.

Okay?
Then what should I do, toss it in a landfill?  Then spend another $1,100.00 on a new one.....  I'm thinking that would probably not be the best plan......

Still thinking a rebuild would come out under that total....

weather you toss it in a landfill or fix it is up to you. just bringing up the topic of expense. the 064 is one of the most expensive saws to do any real work on. you'd be further ahead finding a good slightly used 660 for the price of a basic rebuild it's going to cost you in a shop on that 064.
that saws on a mill so I wouldn't even come close to thinking of aftermarket parts. none. period. end of story.
most places around me:
replace bearings and seals= $300 not including parts.
piston replacement= $175ish not including parts.
carb rebuild= $50 not including parts
bearings and seals $60
piston kit $130
carb kit $20
gasket set $15
ms660s' in excellent shape around my area go for around $600-$700. I see them far cheaper down south. you do the math.
using the 'I'm on the sawmill and have no time' excuse will get very expensive fast. anybody with even the littlest idea how to twist a screw driver or turn a wrench could easily have that saw up and going again with their own 2 hands. far faster than a shop also. lots of people here on this very forum that can help talk you through any issues you come across.
when I grow up, i wanna be an adult.

Mastermind here does complete rebuilds here for hire, lives in TN.

I would imagine it would get pretty pricey on a rebuild with some else doing it though.  Why not get another saw like a 066 660 and then learn to rebuild the 064 on your own.

You would be better off sending it to mastermind for a stock rebuild. They do a lot of them for people that don't have a good local shop. If I had more time I would do it for you for a little bit of labor and parts.
