261/362 crank issues
« on: July 30, 2014, 06:21:05 pm »
I have talked to local stihl dealer and he says they are having some problems but that he is not sure exactly what they are at this point. I have had 6 261's with the crank wore where the clutch bearing rides on it and a couple 362's with the same problem along with a 362 that the big end rod bearing failed on.362 with rod bearing failure has a perfect piston and cylinder. I dug the 362 out from under the bench to take a picture. it has been hanging around the shop for 6 months and decided to add it in to my questions about the 261. Anyone else seeing these issues or do I pass these all off as isolated cases of operator error.

I've replaced a few clutch drum be Rings on our 32 ' and never noted any odd wear.  Could the plastic cages be melting from abuse and thrashing the surface?

bearing and cages are intact and serviceable in my opinion. clutch drum shows quite a bit of wear though. 1 or 2 I would of just passed it off as tightening chain to tight and no grease in the bearing but I have had 6 of the 261 and a 362 with the wear on the crank added with the big end bearing failures on the 362's it just got me wondering. these are coming from a powerline trimming crew and they are hard on stuff but in my opinion I shouldn't be seeing these problems in saws with 160psi and machine marks still on the pistons

My guess is a bad case hardening/Nitriding on the crank assembly.  I've replace a lot of dry burned up clutch bearing from abused saws and never seen an issue with the crank itself
